See the Risk, Feel the Impact: How Simulations Bring Prevention to Life

Driving simulation with fatal vision goggles

When it comes to fentanyl and opioid misuse, it’s not enough to just talk about the dangers—people need to experience what it feels like to lose control. That’s where simulations come in.

We use tools like Fatal Vision® goggles to give participants a powerful, hands-on lesson about how opioids impact the body and mind. These simulations are designed to show the physical, mental, and emotional risks of substance use in a way that words alone can’t.

What the Simulations Look Like

  • Opioid Goggles: With different settings, they mimic the effects of opioids—like nodding out, slowed reflexes, and impaired perception.
  • Driving Challenge: Wearing the goggles, participants must navigate a steering wheel and obey traffic signs, quickly realizing how difficult (and dangerous) it is to drive under the influence.
  • Weighted Wrist & Puzzle Activity: These add-ons test coordination and judgment, showing just how hard everyday tasks become when impairment sets in.

Why They Matter

The takeaway is simple but powerful: when you’re under the influence, you lose control. Your reaction time slows. Your perception shifts. Your judgment is compromised. Feeling this firsthand helps participants connect the dots—substances don’t just affect “someone else.” They can change your decisions, your safety, and your future.

Prevention in Action

Simulations are used during Narcan trainings and other community programs, and they’re open to anyone middle school age and up. Whether you’re a student, parent, teacher, or community member, these tools are a chance to learn, reflect, and make better choices in real-life situations.

The Bigger Picture

At the end of the day, the goal isn’t just to show the risks—it’s to empower people to pause and think before making a choice. Prevention starts with awareness, and awareness starts with experiences that stick.
